in plain words.

## Ask about the medicine and its use

A formulary is a plan’s list of medicines it covers. Prior authorization means the plan must agree before paying.

As of September 2026, Medicare drug coverage may pay for a weight medicine used to treat another accepted medical condition, such as diabetes or heart risk. Your plan must still check whether it covers the exact medicine for that use.

Being eligible for coverage does not guarantee that the plan pays.

Ask about your share of the cost, any approval needed, and whether the plan covers the medicine as a shot or a tablet. Write down what the plan asks the clinician to send.

Ask in your own words

## Understand Medicare’s temporary help with weight medicines

As of September 2026, the temporary Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program offers eligible patients certain weight medicines for a copay of $50 each month.

A copay is your share of the medicine bill. The program starts on July 1, 2026 and ends on December 31, 2027.

The program is separate from your usual Medicare drug coverage. It does not mean Medicare generally covers weight-loss treatment. In 2026, a central service handles its approval requests and pharmacy payments, rather than your usual drug plan. Ask your clinician how to request this help.

To qualify, you must meet the program’s health requirements, have an eligible plan and a prescription, and get approval before payment.

People with type 2 diabetes do not qualify for this program; they are directed to their usual Medicare drug coverage.

The program covers certain tablets and injections, but the exact product and injection device affect whether it qualifies. Ask your clinician and plan to check whether the medicine qualifies as a tablet, vial or particular injection pen.

## Ask what the payment counts toward

As of September 2026, the program’s $50 payments do not count toward your usual Medicare drug plan’s yearly limit on what you pay yourself. Paying this money does not bring you closer to reaching that limit. The program provides no extra financial help for people with low incomes.

Ask your plan to explain what you would still pay for other medicines after reaching its yearly spending limit.

You cannot add coupons or discounts to this program’s medicine payments.

Ask whether a quoted payment counts toward your plan’s deductible, the amount you pay before coverage begins, or its yearly spending limit.

## Keep savings cards separate from cash offers

As of September 2026, the branded weight and diabetes medicine savings cards checked require workplace or private insurance. They exclude Medicare and other government health coverage.

Having Medicare does not necessarily rule out a separate cash offer through the drug manufacturer’s pharmacy service. Under that offer, you pay for the medicine yourself, without using insurance.

Cash payments for the drug-company offers checked are excluded when counting spending toward your insurance deductible or yearly spending limit.

Ask your insurer and the company named on the cash or savings-card offer how you would get the price and whom you would pay. Use the contact details on the offer, and ask for the terms in writing.

Ask in your own words

Which terms apply to my coverage, and does this payment count toward any plan limit?

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the agency running the program, explains the health requirements. It also names the medicines, tablets and injection devices that qualify.
